What Needs Torque Testing?

In practice, this involves checking fasteners, bolts, and screws as well as rotating parts of the product itself.

For example, if a screw is inserted into a problematic component, it may strip the screw, causing future problems. Or a component of the product may need to be turned, but when it is, too much or little torque is applied, also causing performance problems. Torque testing is performed to determine the tolerances of these components as well as to measure at what point they break.

Knowing this torque information is an invaluable part of research, development, and quality assurance. When a product or component requires torque, it also requires torque testing to know it will perform as expected in the field or in the hands of end users.

Torque testing is performed by inserting a torque transducer between equipment that is applying force and the product that force is being applied to. This allows for accurate data collection of the amount of torque being exerted and at what point failure occurs in the device. A frequently used test standard is ASTM A370.
