Surface Roughness Measurement

Inspection Services for Measuring Surface Roughness

There are many instances in which engineering drawings or specs require surface roughness to be within a tolerance. In those instances, having reliable equipment to accurately measure surface roughness is necessary. One means of verifying roughness is determining the average roughness. This is typically done in either microns (µm) or micro-inches (µ-in).

Roughness of a surface can be measured manually by comparing readings against a surface roughness comparator, but more typically, a surface profile measurement is made with a profilometer. In both of these cases, accurate readings are essential to accurate roughness calculations. That’s where Cross Precision Measurement comes in. Our inspection team can verify that your machinery is performing the way that you need it to. That way, you know you can trust the readings (and in turn, also trust your production process).

Whether you need a part or product surface to be completely smooth or you need a controlled roughness, inspection services are an important part of the equation. Make sure your machinery or instrumentation is reading right every time with Cross.

Quality Inspection Services for Manufacturers and More

Roughness meters (or surface roughness meters) are precise instruments that measure the degree of roughness (or smoothness) of the surface of the target. These meters mainly come in either probe form or laser form. They are able to measure both flat and curved surfaces and even create 3D images of the shape’s roughness profile based on extracted data from the surface. Many utilize a diamond probe, though for some measurements even that may be too potentially damaging (for instance, manufacturing semiconductors).

Accurate surface roughness measurement has applications in

  • Checking metal surfaces for wear
  • Analyzing paint or polish
  • Ultra-small product manufacturing
  • Verifying cut surfaces
  • Accurate small measurements (eg, nanometers)
  • Maintaining product roughness tolerance
  • And many other applications

With so many uses for surface roughness measurement and analysis, it’s critical that you be able to trust your surface metrology scans of rough surfaces. Let Cross help. We can offer onsite inspection services or validate equipment in one of our many calibration laboratories. Contact a Cross expert today to learn more.

Benefits of Accurate Surface Roughness Measurement

Accurately measuring surface roughness can be challenging. Often, you’re working with very small measurements and very tight parameters. When it comes to microchips or semiconductors, even a small error in measurement can render a product useless. At Cross, we aim to avoid that potential problem all together.

Working with Cross Precision Measurement is a reliable means of trusting your surface roughness measurements. Our metrology experts will ensure that the product surface is measured accurately and consistently.

Surface roughness measurement can be performed on a wide range of surfaces, including

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
