Cross Automation Develops Giant Machine Tending Solution for Large Heavy Parts

The Application

When a manufacturer required a large machine tending solution for lifting oversized parts into a washing system, they reached out to several integrators for quotes on a solution. They were specifically looking for a way to automate the process and eliminate human interaction with the parts. The parts weighed between 50-100 lbs. and operators were regularly experiencing injuries trying to load the parts. While the other integrators submitted designs that included lift assist technology, Cross was the only one that listened to the customer and created a fully automated gantry system to lift the parts into the washing system.

The Solution

The automated machine tending solution included a 30 foot actuator and a gripper that weighed over 500 lbs. This large gantry system handshakes with the machine so it knows when to load and unload parts without any human intervention. This is critical because not only is the job dangerous for the operator but due to the nature of the work environment it is also quite difficult to keep the position filled. The customer was able to significantly reduce the risk of injury as well as improve efficiency by automating this process. They plan to replicate this system eventually in all of their facilities which will help to protect their operators and allow them to be allocated to more valuable tasks elsewhere in the plant.
