Viscosity Testing

Viscosity Testing Services

Cross Company is able to perform many different physical testing services, including viscosity testing and analysis procedures for industrial manufacturers, product distributors, and commercial operations. With precision testing equipment and a network of ISO 17025 accredited testing facilities in the US and Mexico, Cross Company Testing can provide you with the physical testing services you need to ensure smooth development, successful distribution, and happy end users.

Viscosity testing is performed to measure a fluid’s resistance to flow (or deform) under stress. More generally, it is a measure of how thick or thin a fluid appears under certain environmental conditions or under duress. For manufactured liquids, resistance to flow is necessary for the manufacture, transportation, and storage of emulsions or other solutions.

At Cross Testing, we have the experience and expertise to provide your team with the viscosity analysis services your product needs.

Cross Viscosity Testing Services

Viscosity testing procedures can be performed on many different liquids and other solutions. This can include oils, fuels, chemicals, petroleum, and many more. Cross viscosity testing methods are used to evaluate fluid flow properties. This can provide valuable information for quality control, product evaluation, and research and development. The viscosity of a solution can be tested to ASTM or other industry-relevant standards in our testing facilities.

At Cross Testing, we can perform viscosity measurement procedures in varying temperatures, pressures, and environmental conditions. This can simulate relevant environments the liquid under test may find itself in when it’s in the field.

Our testing lab can also test for conditions specific to the needs of your product and your end users. Whether it’s a more general viscosity test or something more specialized, we can provide the data you need in cP units or mPa.s.

Viscosity Testing For Your Industry

Many different industries regularly make use of viscosity testing, as well as other physical testing procedures. At Cross, we have experience with a wide variety of industries and a wide range of industry-specific standards. That’s just one of the reasons Cross has become a go-to test solutions provider for so many in the industrial and commercial worlds.

Whether you need to test the viscosity of a liquid solution or check for high viscosity, Cross can help. Gathering relevant data about viscosity lets manufacturers and commercial operations predict how a product will behave in the real world. For instance, in an industrial application, one may need to know the viscosity of a liquid fuel, as a high viscosity liquid requires more power to pump than a low viscosity liquid. Or, in a different vein, a dipping sauce produced by a food and beverage manufacturer may be too runny (low viscosity) or too difficult to pour (high viscosity).

No matter the application, we have a viscosity testing method that will work for your product and provide you with actionable information directly relevant to your product.

Benefits of Viscosity Testing Services

There are many ideal uses for viscosity testing. Some of these include:

  • Commercial solvents and oils
  • Consumer products such as lotion, soap, or shampoo
  • Paintings, glosses, and coats
  • Food and beverage products like condiments, syrup, or sauce
  • Evaluating chemical stability
  • Product comparisons with competitors
  • And many others

These are just some of the areas that are ideal for viscosity testing. And there are also many strengths to viscosity testing over other different testing procedures. This can include:

  • Determine fluid classification (eg, Newtonian, non-Newtonian)
  • Comparing products (eg, comparing different paint manufacturing methods)
  • Predicting viscosity behavior in changing conditions (such as temperature, humidity, and over time)

Combining Viscosity Testing Procedures

Often, just one testing procedure isn’t enough to accurately predict how a product will behave in the hands of end users or in its intended operating conditions. That’s why we generally recommend combining viscosity testing with other test procedures we offer.

This can include other physical testing procedures like vibration testing or flammability testing to simulate other conditions the product may be exposed to. Or it can include environmental testing procedures like thermal shock testing, durability testing, or alternating climate testing. Combining these testing procedures is a reliable means of gathering information and generating predictions for future product behavior.

For a product to have success in the field, it needs to be able to withstand many, many stressors. When you partner with Cross for your testing needs, we’re able to simulate many of the conditions your product will face. We can also devise custom testing procedures based on your product, your industry, and your end user needs.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
