Metrology Glossary: Dormant Scale

What Is A Dormant Scale?

A dormant scale, flush mount scale, or pit scale, is an industrial weighing device permanently integrated into the ground. These scales are primarily used for the purpose of weighing substantial loads, such as trucks, trailers, and shipping containers. Dormant scales are installed below ground level, ensuring that their weighing platform aligns seamlessly with the surrounding surface. This design allows vehicles and heavy cargo onto the scale with ease. Additionally, dormant scales are known for their robust construction, capable of enduring extensive use and heavy loads.

What are Dormant Scales Used For?

Dormant scales are used in many different settings including:

  • Manufacturing and Inventory Control: Integrating dormant scales into inventory management systems helps the process of weight measurements, contributing to enhanced efficiency and accuracy in inventory control. This automation aids in maintaining precise records of inventory levels.
  • Weighing vehicles: Dormant scales are used for weighing vehicles such as trucks and trailers, a crucial function in applications such as freight transportation and inventory management.
  • Weighing livestock: In the agriculture industry, dormant scales are used to accurately weigh livestock, including cattle, pigs, and sheep.
  • Weighing chemicals and hazardous materials: Dormant scales stand out for their applicability in weighing chemicals and other hazardous materials, offering a secure and safe option for installation.
