e (Verification Scale Division)

The smallest unit of weight measurement that a scale can legally indicate and use for commercial transactions. Read More…

E-min(minimum verification scale division)

Smallest division permissible for a scale to still be able to set price based on weight

Eccentric Load

A force application that deviates from the direct center of gravity of a structural component. Read More…

Electrical Noise

Unwanted electrical signals which distort or interfere with the desired signals

Electrical Safety Analyzer

A device dedicated to a various range of electrical safety tests in order to check that the device under test is in compliance with electrical safety requirements

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)

A disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction.

Electromotive Force (EMF)

The energy per unit of charge transferred to electric charges through a device. Read More…

Electrostatic

Relating to stationary or slow-moving electric charges rather than currents.

Electrostatic Charge

The excess or deficiency of electrons on a surface which gives the surface a certain positive or negative charge

Electrostatic Discharge

A flow of electricity which causes an object to lose some or all of its charge.

Endothermic

Accompanied by or requiring the absorption of heat (as in a process or or reaction).

Environmentally Protected

There are legislation and or practices in place to protect that area or species

Environmental Testing

Also referred to as climate testing, environmental testing subjects products to induced environmental conditions to evaluate the effects of these conditions on the product. These conditions may include temperature, humidity, precipitation, radiation, pressure, corrosive elements, etc.

Error (Measurement)

The difference between the actual value and the measured value

Eutectic Temperature

The lowest melting point of a temperature system, usually two or more metals; often characterized as a bonding point, as in eutectic bonding gold to aluminum silicon.

Excitation

The application of energy to a particle, object, or physical system. In load cells and other strain gauge systems, an excitation voltage is applied to energize the bridge circuit.

Excitation Trim

A fundamental technique in load cell calibration that involves the precise adjustment of the excitation voltage applied to individual load cells. Read More…

Expanded Scale

An arrangement that expands a specific portion of an overall range to occupy a larger portion of the full-scale length than it normally would.

Explosion Proof

Explosion-proof equipment serves a crucial role in safeguarding environments where the potential of explosions exist. Read More…

Eyepiece Graticule

A glass disc fitted into the eyepiece of a microscope. These can be fitted to existing eyepieces or eyepieces can be purchased with graticules already fitted. The disc is marked with a fine scale from 0 to 100.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
