Durometer Calibration

Durometer Calibration Services

Durometers are used in a wide range of settings to provide a quick check of the hardness of certain materials. Typically used for determining the hardness of plastics or rubber, these devices are designed with a retractable plunger style indenter which has a shape and resistance based on material to be tested. The indenter travel correlates to a readout with a 0 to 100 scale, indicating material hardness with higher values indicating harder material.

With such a variety of materials, durometer models range from A, B, C, D, E, DO, O, OO, OOO, OOO-S, M, and R on the Shore hardness scale, with testing standards ASTM D2240 types A and D as the most common reference. However an ASTM D2240-00 covers a total of all 12 scales.

If your operation regularly uses durometers, over time they will require calibration. Over time and with frequency of use, the accuracy of readings will diminish. This can lead to problems down the line, like quality control, safety issues, and failed audits. Ensure your durometers are calibrated properly with Cross Precision Measurement.

Equipment Calibration for Durometers

The precision measurement group at Cross offers ISO 17025 accredited durometer calibration with NIST traceable master testing standards such as gage blocks, durometer test blocks, vision systems, and durometer calibrators.

Our durometer calibration procedures require our experienced technicians to measure the geometry of the durometer indenter, verify its travel, and use a minimum of three durometer test blocks to take average readings across the entire scale. This data is then stored and provided to our customers. That way they can have the documentation they need to be prepared for any calibration or quality audit that may arise.
