Metrology Glossary: Diameter Tape

What Is Diameter Tape?

Diameter tape is a specialized tool used for measuring the diameter of cylindrical objects. Typically composed of flexible materials such as metal or plastic, it features markings on one side that are divided by π (pi). When the tape is wound around a cylindrical object, the measurement displayed on the tape corresponds to the diameter of the object. This design enables precision when assessing the diameter of cylindrical items.

What Is Diameter Tape Used For?

  • Pipefitting and Plumbing: Diameter tapes are useful tools for plumbers and pipefitters engaged in working with cylindrical pipes. They swiftly and precisely gauge pipe diameters, ensuring accurate connections and fittings for optimal plumbing installations.
  • Machining and Metalworking: Precision is critical in machining and metalworking, and diameter tapes play a crucial role in measuring the diameters of rods, tubes, and other cylindrical metal components. This precision is vital for accurate machining and fabrication, particularly for critical metal parts.
  • Cable and Wire Sizing: Electricians depend on diameter tapes to measure the diameter of cables and wires. This measurement aids in determining the appropriate wire size for specific applications, contributing to the safety and efficiency of electrical installations.
  • Woodworking and Carpentry: Carpenters use diameter tapes to measure the diameter of logs, dowels, and other cylindrical wooden elements. This enables precise sizing of wood components for the construction of furniture and various woodworking projects.
  • Textile and Fabric Measurement: Within the textile industry, diameter tapes find application in measuring the diameter of yarns and threads. This information is useful for fabric production processes and quality control measures in the textile manufacturing sector.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
