Metrology Glossary: Data Logger

What Is A Data Logger?

A data logger is a versatile electronic device designed to autonomously record various data points over time, including temperature, pressure, and humidity. These instruments come in both portable and stationary versions, making them suitable for deployment in a wide array of environmental conditions and applications. Data loggers are built to interface with a variety of sensors, enabling them to collect and store data with precision. This data can be stored internally within the device’s memory or transmitted to a connected computer for in-depth analysis, facilitating critical insights and informed decision-making across industries such as research, environmental monitoring, industrial processes, and more.

What Are Data Loggers Used For?

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Climate Research: Data loggers are used to observe temperature, humidity, precipitation, and various climate variables. This aids in comprehending weather patterns, forecasting climate change, and safeguarding environmental well-being.
  • Air and Water Quality Assessment: Employing data loggers to monitor pollution levels in air and water ensures compliance with environmental regulations, safeguarding public health and contributing to pollution control efforts.

Industrial Applications:

  • Manufacturing Process Optimization: Real-time data collected by data loggers, including temperature and pressure, facilitates precise control of manufacturing processes. This optimization minimizes waste, enhances production efficiency, and elevates product quality.
  • Predictive Maintenance: Data loggers are used to track equipment parameters like vibrations, temperature, and power consumption. This data enables predictive maintenance, preventing unexpected failures and reducing costly downtime.
  • Energy Consumption Management: Data loggers play a pivotal role in monitoring energy consumption patterns, aiding in the identification of areas for improvement. This proactive approach helps in lowering energy costs and enhancing overall energy efficiency.

We’re looking through thousands of pages to find the most relevant information.

In the meantime, enjoy these fun facts…

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
