Magnetic Flow Meters

Cross Company Magnetic Flow Meters

In a magnetic flow meter, the liquid acts as a conductor as it flows through the pipe. This induces a voltage which is proportional to the average flow velocity – the faster the flow rate, the higher the voltage. That voltage is picked up by sensing electrodes mounted in the meter tube and sent to the transmitter which takes the voltage and calculates the flow rate based on the cross sectional area of the meter tube.

Cross offers a range of magnetic flow meters from leading brands such as McCrometer to customers in our territories throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Take a look at some of the most common fields of application we service and contact our flow and safety technologies team to get a quote for a magnetic flow meter today!

Advantages of Using A Magnetic Flow Meter

Magnetic flow meters (or electromagnetic flowmeters or magmeters) are a widely used flow measurement device. There are significant advantages to using magnetic flow meters over traditional flow meters, making them a popular choice for applications that involve conductive fluids. Some other advantages include non-intrusive measurement, wide range of fluid compatibility, bi-directional flow measurement, and lower susceptibility to fluid contaminants.

When a conductive fluid flows through a pipe with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the flow direction, a voltage is induced across the fluid. The magnitude of this voltage is directly proportional to the flow velocity of the fluid. By measuring this voltage, magnetic flow meters can accurately determine the flow rate of the conductive fluid.

At Cross, our magnetic flow meter solutions can enhance your flow measurement accuracy and increase your process reliability overall.

Benefits of Magnetic Flow Meters

There are many benefits that come with using Cross magnetic flow meters for process applications. Some of those benefits include

Wide Range of Fluid Compatibility

A significant advantage of magnetic flow meters is their ability to measure a wide range of conductive fluids (including water, wastewater, chemicals, slurries, and others). This allows magnetic flow meters to provide consistent and accurate measurements regardless of the fluid composition.

Low Pressure Drop

Magmeters have a minimal impact on flow systems due to their non-intrusive design. Unlike many other flow meters, magnetic flow meters don’t create a significant pressure drop across the pipeline. This is a critical consideration in applications where consistent pressure is necessary.

Robust Construction

With no moving parts, magmeters have a much lower risk of mechanical failure which reduces overall maintenance requirements. This robust design enhances their reliability and ensures continuous and accurate flow measurements, reducing both potential downtime and maintenance costs.

Fields Of Application

High percentage of solids – Sludges, slurries, minerals, paper, sewage – flows with high levels of solids which cannot be measured by other types of meters.

Obstruction less measurement – Nothing projects into the flow stream, no head loss, no parts to maintain.

Very corrosive liquids – Acids, caustics and corrosive chemical additives are isolated from the meter by inert linings and electrodes.

Conductive Liquids – Liquids where conductivity is at sufficient levels to induce measurable voltage.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
