Smart Sensors for Work Vehicles

Whether it is an industrial machine or a mobile on-road/off-road machine, sensors are a key to how a machine functions. These sensors provide constant feedback to determine if a machine is operating within specification.

With mobile machines, sensors provide information to your machine controller such as has the operator properly leveled the machine before operating, has a boom reached full extension, is it about to collide with another machine, is your oil contaminated, and the list goes on.

They are the eyes and ears of your machine. Which is why it’s crucial to have the right sensor for your mobile machine.

Creating Smart Mobile Machines

Performance and safety are two of the most important considerations when it comes to machine control systems. And in order to achieve optimal performance and functional safety, the right sensor is necessary.

Integration of these sensors (such as vision) can be complex. For assistance in selecting the right product for your application, contact a Cross mobile systems integration expert to discuss your machine requirements.

Our experts can work with your team to develop a complete solution to ensure that you have the right equipment, working together, to improve your machine performance and productivity.

Heavy Duty Sensors

With a mobile machine, sensors can be subjected to very difficult environmental conditions such as high and low temperatures, extreme vibration, and severe weather. They can be required to operate at low voltage, especially during engine cranking conditions.

Sometimes they need to have digital output signals, analog output signals, or possibly even communicate via CAN (CANopen and/or J1939).

Frequently Asked Questions

Work vehicle sensors are intelligent sensors that are used to control and monitor the fluid pressure, temperature, and other critical operations in work machines. Whether on-road or off-road, sensors are a key part of managing mobile machine performance and planned maintenance.

To simplify, sensors in general convert some kind of stimuli (eg, light, heat, sound, etc) into electrical signals which are interpreted and reported. Therefore they are able to monitor a wide variety of different functions and can be deployed to different locations on the work vehicle as needed.

In the majority of cases, sensors need some kind of power supply to function. This power supply can come in many different forms, however. At Cross, we make sure that the sensors being put into place are able to be seamlessly integrated with your machine for optimal performance.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
