Application Note: Custom Actuator for Automotive Parts Manufacturer

Cross creates custom actuator for automotive parts manufacturer

An automotive manufacturer was in need of replacement actuators for their winding machines. They had multiple machines in their facility, and each time an actuator failed they had to order a replacement from the OEM in Europe. Unfortunately, the cost of the replacement parts was increasing and so were lead times on orders, so they needed a plan for future spares.

Cross was able to create a solution for the customer that bolted directly into the place where the old actuator was mounted, and utilized standard parts that could easily be ordered in the future. The Cross Automation team accomplished this by reverse-engineering the motor, DB9 connector, and actuator making installation as simple as plugging in the actuator and bolting it into place. Additionally, they improved the original design by making mounting simpler. Before operators had to get inside the machine to bolt it into place, now they can simply mount the part from the outside. The Cross Solution was able to save the customer both time and money, simplifying the process for ordering and replacing a part that had been a major pain point.

If you have older equipment with actuators that are obsolete or hard to find, contact Cross. Our team will work with you to create a replacement that is easy to source and they may even be able to improve the design!
