Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Cross Company Ultrasonic Flow Meters

Ultrasonic flow meters measure the velocity and flow rate of liquids, gases, and steam using ultrasonic waves which are transmitted through the media and sometimes, the pipe wall. They operate using transmitters which are either mounted inside (in-line: concentration meters) or on the outside of the pipe (clamp-on).

Clamp-on meters are non-invasive, ideal for sanitary conditions or corrosive liquids as well as water and energy meters. They also excel at performing in low-flow conditions.

Ultrasonic meters are available in two types, transit time and doppler flow meters, depending on the makeup of the medium. For a full explanation of the theory behind ultrasonic flow meters, please check out our article “Understanding how ultrasonic flow meters work.

Non-Invasive Flow Measurement

In industries where measuring and regulating flow is important, flow meters are an indispensable part of the process. However, flow meter installation is often thought of as an invasive and time-consuming process.

This thinking isn’t unwarranted. Many flow meters go inside of a pipe, which requires the time and resources for installation. But there is an alternative. If non-invasive, clamp-on flow meters are something your process needs, Cross has you covered.

Our Ultrasonic Flow Meters are non-invasive, non-contact, and NIST-traceable. That means that when you go with a cross Ultrasonic Flow Meter, you know you’re getting some of the best. We’ve become a leader in non-invasive flow meter technology. And we want to use it to help your process.

Ease of Installation

A main benefit of a clamp-on flow meter is its ease of installation and maintenance. Without needing to physically place a meter within the pipe, we’re still able to determine an instantaneous rate of flow. Without having to cut into a pipe or weld any parts.

The presence of the flow meter on the outside of the pipe also makes for easier maintenance. Being on the outside puts them in an easily accessible position for calibration, inspection, and maintenance. This has the added benefit of increased uptime, as the flow doesn’t need to be stopped for calibration or maintenance to occur.

The lifecycle of an ultrasonic flow meter is also of note. Being on the outside of the pipe protects the meter from being exposed to direct flow, reducing corrosion and potential contaminants. This also increases the flow meter’s resistance to normal wear and tear.

Flow Verification Surveys

At Cross, we don’t just set up the flow meter and call it a day. It’s important to know that you can trust your ultrasonic flow meter. So we provide flow verification surveys along with field verification for flow surveys.

Between Cross flow meter installation, calibration, and reporting, you’ll know you can trust your readings. We’ll help you measure and verify every step of the way.

If non-invasive flow verification is important to your process, contact an expert at Cross Process Solutions today. We’ll inspect your process and determine the best flow measurement solution for you.

Benefits Of Ultrasonic Flow Meters

The main benefits of ultrasonic flow meters come in the form of fewer process interruptions, less overall maintenance, and increased technology lifecycle.

Fewer Process Interruptions

A clamp-on flow meter outside of a pipe is able to measure rate of flow without being inside of the pipe itself. That means if it needs to be calibrated or verified, the pipe itself doesn’t need to be opened. This translates to less downtime and fewer process interruptions for you and your facility.

Less Overall Maintenance

Ultrasonic flow meters have no moving parts, meaning there are significantly less points of failure when compared to other flow measurement technologies. Their location on the outside of the pipe also makes regular inspection easier, so you can know quickly if anything needs maintenance.

Increased Technology Lifecycle

A non-invasive, clamp-on flow meter isn’t exposed directly to the flow itself. This leads to increased longevity when compared to other flow measurement technology that requires welding and mounting within a pipe. Longer lifespans mean less downtime and reduced cost.
