Get Ready for Lightning Season!

Warmer weather signals the run-up to lightning season, so now is the time to make sure your rail and truck scales are prepared. A single lightning strike, or one nearby, can short out the load cells, wires, junction boxes and accessories on your heavy capacity scale. And, let’s face it, with today’s increasingly unpredictable weather, it’s not IF there’s a lightning strike, it’s when.

Since your scale is likely the heart of your operation, either inbound or outbound, it’s important to make sure you’re ready for the worst weather or you may face downtime or lost revenue if something happens. Remember, it only takes one strike to take down your entire scale system.

Ensuring Compliance And Smooth Operation For Biogas Facilities

Biogas systems at industrial manufacturing sites are necessary for EPA compliance and can also provide cost savings if the reclaimed gas is used for fuel. However, we frequently find that while the intentions of specifying and installing a system are good, the implementation at the plant level can be less than ideal.

Cross hears frequently that “an engineer at HQ” designed the system and had it installed but it’s either not working properly or it worked for a while but now isn’t. What’s missing is troubleshooting and field service to either dial in the system correctly or repair it and get it back online.

Optimizing your compressed air system can save on energy costs

An optimized compressed air system can mean substantial reductions in overall energy consumption, with energy facilities saving 20-50% on average on their electric bill over 24 months. We recommend Parker’s Transair aluminum compressed air piping system to achieve these savings in your own facility.

Improve Efficiency

Fuel test stands play a critical role in developing and improving the various components of a hydrogen fuel cell. All tests are carried out under very controlled conditions to ensure the components are operating at their most efficient state and the cell is consistently and reliably delivering the required electrical output.

During testing, temperature, pressure, flow rates and other operating conditions must be captured, transmitted and recorded. Cross partner Brooks Instrument’s mass flow controllers can help by providing real-time feedback and precise control.

Reduce Risk

Bucket trucks are common in the energy industry and are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature. Winter weather may slow the movement of hydraulic fluid and delay control response. Hot weather can cause hydraulic fluid to run faster, making controls more sensitive. Both can cause the bucket to jolt suddenly or to be positioned in an unsafe area.

Parker thermoplastic hoses are designed to keep hydraulic fluid moving properly and maintains the compressibility of the hose. TOUGHJACKET is a non-conducting hose that provides controllability despite extreme abrasion and temperature variations.

Improve Efficiency

A 10MW waste incineration plant regularly had issues when the turbine was started up. This was caused by excessive oil aging varnish deposits in the control block. In order to improve efficiency, the plant wanted to have fewer oil changes, extend the life of the filter and reduce unscheduled downtime.

Cross partner Schroeder Industries recommended a Varnish Mitigation Unit, a filter power unit to remove oil aging products from the mineral oil-based turbine oil. By installing the VMU, the oil service life was extended from 1.5 years to over 5 years.
