Metrology Glossary: Ring Gauge

What Is A Ring Gauge?

A ring gauge is a tool in precision measurement that accurately determines the external diameter of cylindrical objects. This tool consists of a precisely machined metal ring with a specific inner diameter. When using a ring gauge, one inserts the object to be measured. If it fits inside, it confirms the object’s outer diameter adheres to the required size. If the object does not fit, it signals an outer diameter that exceeds the intended specification. This makes the ring gauge a crucial quality control instrument for verifying the correct sizing of cylindrical components in diverse industrial and manufacturing settings.

What Are Ring Gauges Used For?

Manufacturing:

  • Automotive: Validating the precision of diameters in pistons, bearings, and critical engine components to guarantee optimal performance and safety standards.
  • Aerospace: Confirming the exact diameters of aircraft parts such as landing gear components and engine shafts to ensure a precise fit and uphold structural integrity.
  • Machine tools: Measuring shafts, spindles, and other machine components with ring gauges to uphold tight tolerances, contributing to smooth and efficient machine operation.

Construction:

  • Bolting and fasteners: Verifying diameters of bolts, screws, and other fasteners to assure proper fit and robustness in crucial structures.
  • Pipes and tubing: Ensuring the diameters of pipes and tubing in plumbing, HVAC, and other construction applications meet specifications for quality and reliability.

General Quality Control:

  • Inspecting finished products: Utilizing ring gauges across diverse industries to verify that the final dimensions of manufactured goods align with specified standards.
  • Setting and calibrating other measuring instruments: Employing ring gauges as reference standards to calibrate various measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers, ensuring accuracy in measurement instruments.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
