Founded in 1988 from a team which branched out of a manufacturers’ representative firm and a small distributor acquisition, Motionex was an automation technology distributor of motion control and factory automation solutions. Based in Charlotte NC, the company served customers throughout the southeast in a ten-state region from Virginia to Florida and west to Arkansas and Louisiana. 

Solutions were sold by strategically located outside field sales mechanical and electrical engineers, field applications engineers, and inside application engineers – all supported by a team of customer service and operations staff. This educated and trained technical sales force was one of the distinguishing features that Motionex offered to its industry segment.

Serving a core of Fortune 2000 companies, product categories from Motionex included motion control, mechanical systems & actuators, industrial computers, and sensors. The product mix consist of a range of hardware components, including; servos, steppers, drives, multi-axis control, specialty motors, linear actuators, XY tables, gantry systems, gearboxes, industrial computers, data acquisition, operator interfaces, photoelectric sensors, fiber optic sensors, safety light curtains, optical and precision encoders.

The 25,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Charlotte provided extraordinary service to customers from centralized inventory and advanced operations software. Capabilities at the time included extensive inventory, same day shipment, variety of shipment methods, stock-a-spare, 24-7 access to inventory, a website (one of the first in this field), 24 hour access to technical info by web or fax on demand, training on site or remote, technical service and programming support.

In 1992 Motionex was acquired by Cross Company and their team of sales engineers and operations staff joined our growing company. This foundation of highly technical expertise and organizational infrastructure helped the group to evolve into what is now the Cross Automation Group.
