Industrial Terminology Glossary – E
e (Verification Scale Division)
The smallest division (interval) a scale may have and be permitted to set price based on weight
E-min(minimum verification scale division)
Smallest division permissible for a scale to still be able to set price based on weight
Eccentric Load
A load which is non-symmetric with the central axis of a support system. In the case of scales, a base which is not level will create error due to eccentric loading.
Electrical Noise
Unwanted electrical signals which distort or interfere with the desired signals
Electrical Safety Analyzer
A device dedicated to a various range of electrical safety tests in order to check that the device under test is in compliance with electrical safety requirements
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
A disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction.
Electromotive Force (EMF)
Abbreviated EMF, is the electrical intensity or developed by a source of electrical energy such as a battery or generator. A device that converts other forms of energy into electrical energy provides an emf as its output.
Electrostatic
Relating to stationary or slow-moving electric charges rather than currents.
Electrostatic Charge
The excess or deficiency of electrons on a surface which gives the surface a certain positive or negative charge
Electrostatic Discharge
A flow of electricity which causes an object to lose some or all of its charge.
Endothermic
Accompanied by or requiring the absorption of heat (as in a process or or reaction).
Environmentally Protected
There are legislation and or practices in place to protect that area or species
Also referred to as climate testing, environmental testing subjects products to induced environmental conditions to evaluate the effects of these conditions on the product. These conditions may include temperature, humidity, precipitation, radiation, pressure, corrosive elements, etc.
Error (Measurement)
The difference between the actual value and the measured value
Eutectic Temperature
The lowest melting point of a temperature system, usually two or more metals; often characterized as a bonding point, as in eutectic bonding gold to aluminum silicon.
Excitation
The application of energy to a particle, object, or physical system. In load cells and other strain gauge systems, an excitation voltage is applied to energize the bridge circuit.
Excitation Trim
The oldest and still most used method of trimming each individual load cell in a scale or similar system with multiple load cells. The output is trimmed by placing series resistance into the supply circuit to reduce the excitation voltage, resulting in the reduction in sensitivity of the individual load cells to equal the lowest one.
Expanded Scale
An arrangement that expands a specific portion of an overall range to occupy a larger portion of the full-scale length than it normally would.
Explosion-proof equipment serves a crucial role in safeguarding environments where the potential of explosions exist. Read More…
Eyepiece Graticule
A glass disc fitted into the eyepiece of a microscope. These can be fitted to existing eyepieces or eyepieces can be purchased with graticules already fitted. The disc is marked with a fine scale from 0 to 100.
