Fume hoods are an important piece of equipment in laboratories where chemicals and other materials can cause fumes or exhausts that are harmful to the human body or laboratory environment. The main purpose of a fume hood is to provide an enclosed environment where work can be performed without the risk exposure to those fumes or exhaust. Unlike the exhaust vent you may see in a kitchen over the stove, chemical fume hoods typically require an enclosed environment with a sliding glass enclosure which can be raised or lowered to access the work space (otherwise known as sash).
Depending on the materials being handled and the laboratory environment, some spaces require a variable air volume ventilation system (VAV) which can vary the amount of conditioned air to meet the actual need of the space required. Other spaces may require a constant air volume ventilation system (CAV) which offers a constant quantity of airflow.
