Pilot Operated Relief Valves

Maximized Efficiency and Control With Pilot Operated Relief Valves

When managing low-pressure storage tanks and processes vessels, the margin between operating pressure and Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) represents efficiency. Run-of-the-mill weight or spring-loaded venting devices typically require a large safety margin to prevent simmering or leakage, reducing your usable tank capacity.

Cross Company’s Process Solutions group works with industrial facilities to reclaim that usable tank capacity. We can provide high-performance Pilot Operated Relief Valves designed for even the most demanding storage applications. The pilot-operated solutions we offer utilize the system pressure itself to maintain a tighter seal as pressure increases (as opposed to traditional valves where the closing force diminishes as system pressure rises). This allows you to run systems closer to design limits without compromising safety or compliance.

Technical Advantages of Pilot Operated Relief Valves

Pilot Operated Relief Valves reverse the standard dynamic between system pressure and sealing force. Within a pilot operated system, the pressure acts on the actuator diaphragm, transferring force to the pallet to hold the valve closed. This design ensures that the main valve remains tight right up to the set pressure. This is a critical advantage over traditional valves. Rated flow at 10% overpressure allows for operation closer to the tank’s Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP). This reduces the need for excessive overpressure safety margins, effectively increasing your usable operating range.

Leak-Free Reliability

Minimized Product Loss

Advanced Configurations for Complex Systems

Standard relief valves may struggle in complex piping geometries or specific environmental conditions. Cross Company engineers process solutions that account for these variables. This includes

Remote Sensing

Preventing valve chatter and rapid cycling. This allows the pilot to react to the true static pressure in the tank

Vacuum Protection

Many of these models are able to be equipped with integrated vacuum breakers, providing dual-direction protection

Field Serviceability

Many of these models feature top-entry access, allowing service on internal components and diaphragms without removing the valve body
