Engineering Application Note: Mobile Scrap Bin Weigh System

Cross Engineers Custom Scale Solution for Munitions Manufacturer

Summary
A munitions manufacturer requiring a new method for weighing scrap metal in their process requested a portable scale to be movable by one person and with a 3’ x 3’ footprint. This unit was to also weigh up to 1500 lbs so that up to four of their 18” scrap filled barrels can be weighed at one time. In addition to those requirements, they also required the unit to have data logging capabilities compatible with SAP software and wireless upload capability. The original method involved moving scrap bins across the factory floor to a floor scale. This required extensive heavy lifting, and resulted in scrap becoming wedged in the gap around the
scale, affecting the accuracy of the measurements.

Benefit
Bringing the scale to the scrap metal eliminates many of the risks associated with lifting and moving the scrap barrels around the factory. Additionally, giving the scale wireless upload capability increases the ease and accuracy of data recording.
