Electro-Hydraulic Power Units

Electro-Hydraulic Power for Mobile Machines

There’s no doubt that more and more work vehicle manufacturers and other OEMs are moving towards electrification. Whether it’s mandated, end-user-related, or cost-cutting, there are a variety of reasons many vehicle manufacturers are making the switch to electric.

At Cross Mobile Systems Integration group, we understand the needs of both original equipment manufacturers and end-users. We’ve worked with a wide range of customers in the field of work vehicle electrification. One area where this is particularly apparent is electric hydraulic power units.

Our Electro-Hydraulic Power Units (eHPUs) are designed with mobile machinery manufacturers in mind. They simplify hydraulic power availability for both hybrid and electric mobile applications. Integrating hydraulic electric power increases energy efficiency and environmental cleanliness while reducing operating costs and maintenance time. If you’re looking to make the switch, Cross can help.

Lower Emissions, Higher Savings

A leading challenge faced by mobile equipment manufacturers is predicting the market while maintaining a unique competitive advantage over competitors. Maintaining this balance is necessary to achieve wide distribution and end-user satisfaction.

At Cross Mobile Systems Integration group, we advise all industrial vehicle manufacturers to consider vehicle electrification and implementation of electric motors or eHPUs as a means of achieving these goals.

Our experts learn the ins-and-outs of your vehicle, production process, and end user. That way we can design the optimal solution for your mobile machine and your bottom line. Contact a Cross mobile equipment systems expert to discuss how electrification could benefit your mobile vehicle.

Electrifying Hydraulic Power

An electric hydraulic power unit (or eHPU) is made up of four primary components: a prime mover (in this case, an electric motor), a pump, a valve, and a reservoir. They operate through an electric motor running a hydraulic pump, creating flow to cylinders.

Electric motors driving hydraulic pumps leads to an increase in efficiency over the traditional internal combustion engine power typical of many mobile hydraulic machines. This efficiency can be in the range of upper 90%. That’s far and beyond the efficiency of a hydraulic system powered by an internal combustion engine.

Greater efficiency also translates to smaller battery packs. In mobile work vehicles, space is always at a premium. A big part of the challenge of designing and manufacturing mobile machinery is managing the limited space available. In the case of electro-hydraulic power units, the increase in efficiency and subsequent reduction in size frees up valuable space in mobile machines. Make the most of your machine’s space and efficiency with a custom eHPU designed for your unique machine and production process.

Benefits of Electric Over Hydraulic Power Units

Electro-hydraulic power units act as an alternative to the traditional gas/hydraulic-powered actuators common in hydraulic machinery. They function by utilizing available gas pressure within a pipeline. However, they aren’t the exact same as a standard HPU. Electric HPUs are completely closed systems with their own internal hydraulic reservoir, meaning they don’t produce natural gas emissions. This is a major selling point for manufacturers looking to reduce their environmental impact.

The eHPU also eliminates the need for a standard hydraulic power unit as well as the complex piping required of one. This reduces the overall footprint while saving space, allowing for optimized builds, and significantly reducing the machine’s environmental impact.

Systems with less components also tend to have a longer operational lifespan. That means longer lasting machines with less maintenance requirements or unscheduled maintenance-related downtime.

Features for All Industries

There are a wide range of benefits eHPUs can provide for industrial work vehicles and equipment manufacturers. Some primary benefits include a reduction of operating costs due to high energy efficiency solutions, reduced environmental impact, high-force capability, and an interface that allows for direct mounting (which reduces the amount of piping and maintenance required).

These benefits combined with simple motion control, high reliability, and the ability to be integrated with custom solutions creates an appealing offer for OEMs and other vehicle manufacturers. Implementing eHPUs is a viable step towards full electrification. And with the way the market is moving, having electric offerings is rapidly becoming a necessity to remain competitive.

Don’t get left behind. Take the steps toward environmental sustainability and competitive manufacturing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electric over hydraulic power units have a high power density, simple motion control, and efficient thermal exchange management. They are also higher in overall efficiency than a traditional internal combustion engine system while taking up less space. Many OEMs are making the move to vehicle and fleet electrification due to a combination of long-term savings and a desire to remain competitive in a rapidly electrifying industrial market.

Many different industries stand to benefit from implementing vehicle electrification technology into their production processes. Some of these include eHPUs for municipal vehicles, electro-hydraulic power units for recycling application, utility vehicle electric HPU, off-highway vehicle electric hydraulic power units, and even industries such as construction or rail. It’s only becoming more and more difficult to justify not switching to electric.

The best way to get started is to contact a Cross mobile systems electrification expert.
