Recently, I went to visit a potential customer that found us through our Robotic Blog Series. They are a flexible hose manufacturer and each hose must have a cuffed seal on each end. They were able to build an in-house method for doing this, but it required a full-time associate to spend two (2) shifts doing a highly repetitive and unrewarding process 5 days per week.
The company cost for two associates to do this was $60k! Human labor is too valuable to be used this way! Thankfully, this company felt that by automating this process, they could ultimately save money and reinvest their human resources better.
When we arrived for the Universal Robots demonstration, we decided that instead of a generic show, we would go ahead and solve their problem using the UR5 AE3. This would give them a much more clear picture as to how a Universal Robot could easily and effectively automate their process. This demonstration is a proof-of-concept demonstration only and the moves/positioning are not optimized, so rest assured that a Cross Company collaborative robot (cobot) is capable of much, much more!
The current process is detailed below and we mirrored it using the Universal Robot UR5 AE3:
- Pick a cuff out of a box place in machine
- Pick 1st end of hose place in machine
- Press start button of sealing machine and wait 20 seconds for seal to take place
- Remove sealed hose from machine
- Repeat process for opposite side of the hose
